Fool’s Toast to the Red King

by Marly Youmans

May you spire from black-hearted ground,
May your back be fletched with blessings,
May golden sun dance in your cup,
And may you live as one who breathes
Breath of the rose-red red, red rose.

May your dear friend never fool you,
Though he weep and reel with laughter
In telling blue or jocund tales.
May a Queen flower, white with spring,
Within your stone-walled orchard close.

May your kingdom be endlessness,
May it stand as shelter for your crown,
May it frisk like fire on the waves,
May it be a tree of isinglass
Reflecting all the world and you.
