Heir Apparent

by E. Shaun Russell

An aging king was yearning for an heir
To take the throne when time was nigh to cede,
As years progressed, his want became a need
So dire, he turned attentions everywhere;
Of maids or dowdy dames he did not care
So long as they submitted to the deed,
But though he did his best to spread his seed,
No womb gave life — no child was brought to bear.
Upon his deathbed, riddled with disease,
The old, decrepit king was heard to say,
‘If I could just survive another day,
I’d fill the kingdom with my legatees.’
And though his realm was left with regencies,
The women cheered the day he passed away.
